Guide to Sponsorship and Family Reunification

Sponsorship Eligibility Criteria

To be a guarantor (sponsor), you must be at least 18 years old and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. You must sign a financial commitment to your loved one, proving that you can provide for their basic needs. The relationship (marriage, common-law union) must be proven to be authentic. Processing Times

The government generally targets a processing time of 12 months for the sponsorship of a spouse, common-law partner or dependent child. Deadlines may vary depending on whether the request is made inside or outside Canada.

Government Costs and Fees

The government processing fee for sponsoring a spouse is generally C$1,080, including the sponsorship fee, the principal applicant processing fee and the right of permanent residence fee. Biometrics must be added ($85 CAN).
